What is Amputee Football?

Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ)

What's Amputee Football?

Amputee Football or Para football is a modified version of the sport specifically designed for individuals with limb amputations or differences. It is played by athletes who have undergone amputations of either their upper or lower limbs or have congenital limb deficiencies.

Amputee Football means different things to each individual person. At its heart, it can be a liberating sport for escapism, self-expression, and freedom.

How's the game played?

The game follows similar rules to traditional football, with a few modifications to accommodate the players’ amputations. For example, outfield players have one leg and use crutches to move around the field, while goalkeepers have one arm. Amputee football provides an opportunity for individuals with limb differences to participate in a competitive sport and showcase their skills.

In its codified format, World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF) recognizes the International 7v7 format on a 60×40 meter pitch, where outfield players participate on elbow crutches and goalkeepers are single-arm deficient.

What are the rules or guides of amputee football?

The sport has its own set of regulations. Despite these regulations, it is perceived as a regular form of football. Please find below the most important regulations:

  • Each team is allowed to have seven players, with six field players and one goalkeeper.
  • There are no restrictions on the number of substitutions.
  • One of the field players is missing a part or the entirety of their leg.
  • The goalkeeper is missing a part or the entirety of their arm.
  • Both the field players and the goalkeeper are only allowed to use their complete arm or leg. This ensures that everyone on the field plays under the same conditions.
  • The field players use crutches to move around, but they must not use them to obstruct the ball or other players.
  • A match consists of two halves, each lasting 25 minutes.
  • Amputation football is played on a smaller field, roughly equivalent to half the size of a regular football field.
